2010 Annual Meeting

The Davis Aquatic Masters 2010 Annual Meeting was held Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 with lots of fanfare, drinks, good food, and a certain amount of business was even conducted.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS

According to the DAM bylaws, voting is completed at the meeting, and the new members of the Board of Directors are introduced to the membership. The newly elected board member include:

Warren Roberts and Stu Kahn

LILLIAN ROWAN MEMORIAL AWARD

DAM head Coach Stu Hahn presented the Lillian Rowan Memorial Award to DAM member Warren Roberts.

Here is the text of Stu's presentation of the award:

"Warren has been physically active most, if not all, of his life. He has been a member of the Davis Aquatic Masters for almost 35 years, brought into the fold under the guidance of Dave Scott and, to an even greater extent, Dave's sister, Jane.

"Those who currently swim with Warren at the 10 a.m. practice know him as a raconteur and an amazing maker of puns; he is also a talented singer, sought after for weddings and other special events. His gentle demeanor, disarming smile and upbeat personality have always been an inspiration.

"Warren's swimming story is unique because he isn't using all his original body parts. Fifteen and one half years ago, he had a hip replaced by a ‘RoboDoc' as part of a research protocol by UCD technicians. Last May, the experimental trials were finally completed, and Warren became the first person to receive an FDA approved, artificial hip from a ‘RoboDoc'.

"Prior to joining DAM, Warren received his degree in Horticulture from UCD in 1964 and immediately enlisted in the Peace Corps. He spent 2 years in Peru as a Horticultural Humanitarian before returning for a shorter second stint after the great 1970 earthquake there.

"After the Peace Corps, a Masters Degree and another teaching stint at Cal Poly Pomona, Warren returned to Davis in 1972 when he became the Arboretum Superintendent for the next 37 years. Over the decades, Warren cultivated not only the University soil, but alsothe hearts and minds of hundreds of arboretum docents and volunteers and thousands of horticultural enthusiasts.

"One of the criteria for this award falls under the heading of motivation. It reads: 'The recipient should motivate self and others through example and philosophy; providing inspiration and wisdom with regard to swimming and to life; and helping others in ways that gives them pleasure in that help'.

"The undersigned hereby attest that Warren Roberts greatly exceeds this criterion and is thus deserving of the 2010 Davis Aquatic Masters Lillian Rowan Memorial Award.

"Corrine Bressler, David Bressler, Judi Williams, Steve Carlsom, Murray Gardner, Frances Zeman, Nong Chancellor, Patricia Lax and Roberta Ranstrom."
