Community Service

Each year, DAM supports a number of projects and programs that benefit swimming and swimmers in the community. A partial list of those is listed below. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A TAX DEDUCTIBLE CHARITABLE DONATION TO SUPPORT DAM'S COMMUNITY SERVICE FUND. The letter that was sent to all DAM members tells how to make a donation. Thanks in advance for making a generous gift.

YEAR END FUNDRAISING APPEAL

Dear Davis Aquatic Masters Club Member,

Now is the time to support our year end fundraising appeal, to fund work that benefits swimmers of all ages, by making a tax-deductible charitable donation to DAM's Community Service Fund.

As you probably know, DAM set an impressive number of national records in 2011:

  • We won the U.S. Masters Club of the Year award;
  • We won the One Hour Postal Swim National Championship;
  • We remain the largest, single city masters swim club in the nation;
  • We are proud that Head Coach Stu Kahn won a national award for setting the standard for coaching masters swimmers;
  • We made our mark on the national competition scene with our Brute Squad and long course races;
  • We raised nearly $40,000 for Swim Across America to provide cancer research for the University of California San Francisco and the Oakland Children's hospitals.

Those are records that made the headlines.

Here's what didn't make the headlines. DAM's seven-member board of directors worked to expand the way the club raises money for projects in the community. That work includes successfully winning tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, which means that DAM members and others can make tax deductible charitable donations directly to the club.

DAM has a long history of generosity. Revenue from your past donations and Berryessa Open Water Swim race helped to build the Brady Family Aquatics Building at Civic Center Pool, subsidize local youth aquatic programs by enabling them to pay a reduced pool rental rate to the city, provide reduced dues to students and seniors over age 64 and free membership for seniors over 79, and make grants to local nonprofit groups.

With our new tax exempt status, DAM's board is seeking to expand efforts to provide financial support for these swimming-related projects:

DAVIS POOLS -- Support expansion or improvement of swimming facilities in Davis , such as construction of a 50-meter pool or making improvements at Civic Center Pool.

SENIOR SWIMMING -- Expand efforts to promote swimming as a way to maintain long-term health in seniors.

RACE SCHOLARSHIPS -- Provide scholarships to encourage juniors, seniors and needy master club members to take part in DAM's Lake Berryessa and long course races.

SUPPORTING SWIM GROUPS -- Continue to provide support for swim groups, such as the Davis High School water polo and swim teams, the Davis Aquadarts and others.

You can help make DAM an even better club by continuing its leadership role in funding swim programs and facilities in the community. Please make a generous tax deductible donation to support this important work.

There are two ways to make a cash donation:

Write a check to Davis Aquatic Masters and put it with the enclosed information sheet in the drop box at Civic Center Pool;

Community Service Projects

Each year, Davis Aquatic Masters conducts a number of large and small community service projects. Here are some of them:

Supporting Community Work

DAM was recently successful in winning tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. That means that member can make tax deductible charitable donations to support DAM’s community service work.

For many years, DAM has had to funnel donations for such community projects through other nonprofit surrogates, such as the Davis Sports Foundation. The most recent of these fundraising efforts was “brick sales campaign” that raised funds to build the Brady Family Aquatics Building at Civic Center Pool.

Revenue from member donations and Berryessa Open Water Swim supported DAM’s community fund, which was used to pay for:

-- Subsidizing local youth aquatic programs by enabling them to pay a reduced pool rental rate to the city;

-- Providing reduced dues to students and seniors over age 64 and free membership for seniors over 79, which promotes a healthy activity for these age groups;

-- Making grants to nonprofit groups, including a Berryessa Trails organization, City of Davis Disabled Swimming Program, Davis Firefighters, Yolo County Court Appointed Special Advocates, Firefighters Pacific Burn Institute, Boy Scouts, Yolo Hospice, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center, American Red Cross, Davis Sports Foundation, Davis High School Water Polo and Swim Teams and Davis Aquadarts.

-- Supporting free community health and education programs, including those on women’s health issues, stress and relaxation techniques and fitness alternatives for the elderly.

Swim Across America Drive Raises $35,500 for Cancer Research

Together the team participating in the DAM fundraiser in March 2011 raised $35,500 for cancer research, and made this the most successful event in the history of the Swim Across America National Pool Program.

We also accomplished our goal of crossing the United States and swam from San Francisco past Ocean City, MD, and continued for another 490 miles into the Atlantic Ocean. Way to go!

I am sincerely grateful for the amazing response this effort received and for all the energy, time, enthusiasm, and support that swimmers showed during the month of March to make this happen. Let's continue to make waves to fight cancer and help raise hope for a future where we don't have to be afraid of cancer anymore.

Food Bank of Yolo County

DAM Donates 1,200 Pounds of Food in January 2011 Drive

In January 2011, DAM collected 1,200 pounds of canned goods as part of a month-long drive for the Food Bank of Yolo County. Members donated the food, which the Woodland-based food bank distributes to families and inviduals with incomes at or below the federal poverty level.

DAM members have participated in a number of food drives, most recently at the 2010 Lake Berryessa Open Water Swim.
