Why swim with Davis Aquatic Masters?
Swimming is great exercise; our heated pool is available year-round; swimming with others of your ability is fun; and DAM offers nine daily workouts.
What's the membership of DAM like?
DAM has over 500 adult swimmers, most of whom swim for fitness, the friendly social atmosphere and for rehab from injuries. From students to retirees, the ages range from 18-90.
I'm not a very fast swimmer, can't swim all the strokes, and am not sure I can finish an hour workout; how good a swimmer must I be to join?
DAM welcomes swimmers of all abilities we have all abilities from an Olympic Gold medalist to novice swimmers. If you can swim 4 lengths of the pool, our coaching staff can help you improve your skills and endurance. You don't need to be able to swim all the strokes to join! Don't be afraid to ask for help. Workouts are adjusted to take into account each swimmer's ability level. We offer a special workout where seniors have priority at 10 am Monday to Friday.
What if I am too slow for the others in my lane? Will I be grouped with others my own speed?
Each lane is grouped by ability. You will be assigned a lane compatible with your skills.
What are the workouts like? How many yards per workout?
Each workout runs for an hour (don't worry if you can't finish the whole hour initially). The coach gives the sets, which vary in distance per lane. The faster lanes generally cover slightly over 3,000 yards per workout, with slower lanes about a third of that distance. Space permitting, you may enter a workout late. The lanes are limited to a maximum of 5 swimmers of similar ability per lane to avoid overcrowding.
When are workouts available?
At Civic Center Pool: Monday to Friday, 6, 7, 10, 11 am, 12, 1, 6:15 and 7:15 pm. We also have two workouts on Saturday at 7:30 am and an intensive workout from 8:30 to 10 am. On Saturday and Sunday, there is lap swim (with a lifeguard rather than a coach) from 10 am to 1 pm. We offer a 5:45 to 7:00 am workout: M-F at Arroyo pool. (Verify the schedule by calling 757-7946.)
Where do I find you?
Civic Center pool is at the corner of Russell Blvd. and B St. behind the Davis City Hall. (Russell Blvd. becomes 5th St. on the other side East side of B St.) Community Pool is across the walkway from the tennis courts at the far end of the high school parking lot off of 14th and B Streets. Arroyo Pool is on Shasta Drive, West of 113 off of Covell Blvd.
What's the water temperature?
It is usually a comfortable 80 degrees.
Are locker rooms and hot showers available?
Yes, adjacent to the pool. At Community Pool, there are dressing rooms rather than locker space.
I'm not in the best of shape now, and don't look so great in a swimsuit. Do I have to wear a racing swim suit?
Any swimsuit will do. And with over 30 swimmers in an average workout, all body types are represented! People aren't focused on your looks as much as you might be just hop in and get some exercise! If you put if off, you might never get going.
Are there races?
DAM hosts three races, which provides the opportunity for members to volunteer and compete. DAM's Lake Berryessa Open Water Swim is held on June 4, 2011. On Aug. 13, 2011, DAM will host a one day long course swim meet at Schaal pool. In November, DAM sponsors the Brute Squad Postal Swim. Other pool races and competitive events are offered almost every month in our region. Competition is optional and fun to try.
Can I try a few trial swims before I sign up?
Sure, the first three swims within two weeks are free; just show up at the pool and tell the coach that you're there to check it out. Goggles are recommended. Caps are optional.
What does it cost?
The dues are $47 per month. There is a $5 initiation fee for all new members. You must also join Pacific Masters Swimming for $44 for the current year. (We require this so that DAM has liability insurance). Dues for those 65 and up are $42. All members are required to sign up for the direct deposit program. Those over 80 do not need to pay the monthly dues, but must pay the $5 initiation fee and join Pacific Masters Swimming.
What if I can swim only a few days in a particular month?
DAM also offers a coupon swim option, so you basically buy a book of swims for $20 in advance, and essentially pay per swim, using up the swims at your leisure. The cards are valid for six months. At each workout or lap swim mark off $5 (let the coach or life guard know). (This book may be used by either a non-member or a member who is on leave at $2 per month of leave.) All those who swim at a DAM workout must be members of United States Masters Swimming.
What about the social aspects?
Besides getting to know fellow swimmers, DAM sponsors a number of parties each year BBQ and one hour swim celebration (late March), summer picnic (July), annual meeting (November), holiday (December), etc. DAM members sometimes get together for informational social gatherings, such as the group that meet for "thirsty Thursday," which is held Woodstock Pizza. Check the DAM newsletter or http://groups.google.com/group/dam_fun. for more information.
