Virtual Coach: Community and Leisure Engagement
Our recent food drive for the YCFB brought in 400+lbs of food and over $5,000 in donations. but they need more help. The regular pool of daily volunteers at the YCFB, compromised mainly of senior citizens, has evaporated. If you, or you kids, are bored and want to do something good for others, help support the YCFB by volunteering at the link below.
We're offering some good swim reads over the next few weeks. This first suggestion comes from Syliva Sensiper. Swim
is a celebration of swimming and the effect it has on our lives. It’s an inquiry into why we swim—the lure, the hold, the timeless magic of being in the water. It’s a look at how swimming has changed over the millennia, how this ancient activity is becoming more social than solitary today. It’s about our relationship with the water, with our fishy forebearers, and with the costumes that we wear. More...
Our next reading suggestion is from Coach Stu. The Three Year Swim Club
: The Untold Story of Maui's Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory. The New York Times bestselling inspirational story of impoverished children who transformed themselves into world-class swimmers. In 1937, a schoolteacher on the island of Maui challenged a group of poverty-stricken sugar plantation kids to swim upstream against the current of their circumstance. The goal? To become Olympians. Our next reading suggestion is from Coach Chad Durieax of Rose Bowl Masters who recommended the book because it was written by one of his Rose Bowl members. Rowdy Gaines says, "The Underwater Window starts fast and moves along with a 6-beat kick. Dan Stephenson knows swimming, and he brings out the richness of the sport. But you don't need to be a swimmer to enjoy this great story of friendship and rivalry. More...
The next good read comes from DAM member Will Davis. He notes it is a well written account of the life and swimming of long-distance legend, Lynne Cox. Certainly an inspiring and motivating story... and it would be the perfect reminder for those who complain about pool water temps. More...
If you're looking beyond books for leisure time, here's a fun game that's relatively new. Sagrada
is a game of dice drafting and window crafting for 1 to 4 players that plays in about 30 minutes. It has a broad age appeal, is made of good quality with a rich design and requires a nice combination of strategy and luck. More...
Swim Goggles Needed. There is a shortage of protective eye ware for our local healthcare professionals and they have suddenly realized how swim goggles would work for them. DAM member Joan Crow has reached out to some contacts at UCDMC and would like to organize a donation effort. If you have clear, crack-free goggles, please consider donating. There will be a collection box near the bricks at Civic starting Thursday morning with delivery expected on Monday afternoon.
