Glossary of Terms

DPS: Distance Per Stroke: Reducing number of arm strokes taken per 25 yards or longer.
Over kick: While swimming increasing the speed of your kick rate. Best achieved by slightly reducing the vertical distance of your kick and speeding up the movement of feet within this distance.
Stroke rate:. The rate at which your6 arms rotate through a pull and recovery cycle.
Negative split: the second half of a given distance is faster than the first half.

Descending: each subsequent repeat swim faster than the prior.
Ascending: each subsequent repeat swim slower than the prior.

80 percent: moderate pace
85 percent: moderate fast
90 percent: fast
95 percent: max
100 percent: race, distinguished from max by incorporating race qualities into the swim.
