Civic Pool Heater - Trouble ahead!

Due to multiple and inexplicable heater malfunctions at Civic pool the City is pursuing a unique resolution. The next time the heater turns off the City will keep it in its non-functioning state and then contact repair personnel for service. Only in an interrupted/off position can a correct equipment diagnosis be made.

The upside of this process is the problem will be fixed.

The downside is that it may take 1-2 days for the repair personnel to arrive, and 1-2 more days for the repairs and for reheating the pool.

When this next malfunction occurs, immediate notice will be emailed to all DAM swimmers and, except for the 6:15pm sessions, the Civic practices will move to Arroyo pool for the duration of the necessary service. Unfortunately, there is no evening space at any other City pool in which to relocate our 6:15pm swimmers.

Arroyo is an 8-lane pool located at 2000 Shasta Dr, in west Davis. The locker rooms are not heated  but the showers are. While at Arroyo, please follow the same Covid guidance options as at Civic.

USMS Registration Renewal

After January 1, swimmers who have not renewed their USMS registration will not be able to swim!

There's still a few swimmers that have not yet renewed! If you've already renewed, then DAM has been notified by USMS - you don't have to worry.

The USMS offers a "Standard USMS Membership" - this is what DAM requires. The "full access membership" is not required, but it will also satisfy DAM's requirement. When you register as a DAM member, the USMS automatically notifies our registrar. Just complete your registration and keep on swimming!

Everyone who swims with DAM must maintain current registration with USMS. Your USMS registration provides liability insurance for DAM and its coaches, and DAM requires that all participants in our workouts, weekend lap swims, and competitions be registered.

2022 USMS One Hour Swim Virtual Championships

  • TIMELINE - The 2022 event has begun and runs through January with entries due to USMS on/by February 2nd.  Go online to register for your swim BEFORE you push off. Return to the online site AFTER your swim to log your splits and your timer’s name.
  • FOOD DRIVE - The Yolo Food Bank has ceased traditional food drive activities and requests monetary donations in lieu of food items. Donations this year will be accepted through January at Arroyo and Civic in the form of checks payable to: Yolo Food Bank.
  • SIGNUPS at CIVIC/ARROYO – January signup calendars are posted at Civic and available at Arroyo for pre-swim signups. One lane will be set aside at each practice for two swimmers to split on Tue thru Fri, with additional lanes and hours available during lap swim on the weekends at Civic.
  • Every Saturday this month, the entire Civic pool (16 swim slots) is set aside from 9:00-10:00am for the OHS.
  • We’ve also reserved Arroyo pool on Monday, Jan 17, MLK Holiday for two hours of OHS availability (9-10am and 10:30-11:30am). Signup sheets are available at both pools. After the 9:00am session fills up, then the 10:30 slots will open.
GRAND PRIX Points – Because the event is a National Championship, a DAM-hosted event and we take the task of dethroning NEM seriously, the Grand Prix award for this one event is SIX points. In addition, as the role of lap counter is equally important to our objective, that job is worth ONE point per hour of counting, for a maximum of SIX points.

MONITORING TRAINING – Accurately monitoring performances in both aerobic and anaerobic training speeds is of key value to swimmers. That’s why DAM trains using both distance (aerobic) and sprint (anaerobic) training stimuli. Outside of precise blood testing, one of the best alternative methods for determining aerobic fitness (endurance) is a timed 30 minute (T-30) or timed 3,000 (T-3,000) test. No one can keep up high levels of efforts for much longer than that without disturbing the balances between production and removal of blood and muscle chemicals. For DAM’s purposes, the annual One Hour Swim (60 minutes) provides similar results in evaluating changes in aerobic capacity.
All club members are encouraged to participate in the 2022 OHS for two primary reasons; First, to allow our swimmers to quantify their current aerobic capacities, and second, to help reestablish DAM as the premier club in the USMS ‘Virtual’ Championship swim series.
Here are the current roster totals from the four largest teams in the OHS as of Jan 9 –
          Indianapolis Masters – 32
          Tamalpias Masters - 25
          DAM – 22
          New England Masters – 14
