President's Message

Civic Pool Schedule

In June of 2020 when DAM returned to the pools with one-swimmer-per-lane, out of necessity, the club expanded its weekday programming by offering Civic practices at 8 and 9am on MWF. We've been fortunate that those hours have been continuously available as traditionally they are used in the summer months by the Aquadart youth team.

After a two-year hiatus, the DARTS are back to their pre-lockdown summer schedule and have again been assigned those hours by the City from Mon, June 13 through Friday, August 5. We realize many of the current 8 and 9am swimmers have grown accustomed to swimming during these extra hours and ask they bear with this adjustment by returning to their previously attended practice times.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Long Course Schedule

Long course training returns to the Schaal pool on the UCD campus beginning Tuesday, June 14 and running through Thursday, August 4

Long course practices will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday only. Morning long course practices are from 6-7am and evenings from 6:05-7:05pm and from 7:05-8:05pm. During those days and times, no practices will be offered at Arroyo from 6:00-7:00am or at Civic from 6:15-7:15pm. During the summer season, parking is free in the Health Sciences lot before 7:15am and after 5:00pm. All swimmers will be asked to help put lane lines in before the sessions and/or with taking them back out afterwards.

Berryessa Volunteers still needed!

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help at our Berryessa swim.

Although many of the volunteer positions have been filled, we still have a need for people to be part of our water safety team. Please consider volunteering if you are comfortable being on the lake in a kayak for a couple hours. You can sign up at Civic or use our online signups.

All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, and we will provide snacks on the day of the event.

You can sign up at Civic, or by clicking the button below! Contact Kathy Gill with any questions.

Head Coach Search Update

Hello DAM Members – The DAM Search Committee will be wrapping up our final week of on site interviews with Matt Zachan.

There is still room for you to sign up for the Q and A on Wednesday, May 11 at 5:15pm. If interested, contact Mary Kahn:  mjoyswim@gmail.com.

We will have Matt coach workouts at 7am, 8am, noon, and 6:15pm.  If you are a regular at these workouts, we encourage you to attend.  If you are not and would like to swim, first priority will go to the people who normally swim at those times. All swimmers will swim their workout, experience our next potential coach and are not asked to fill out any feedback form. We have identified deck “observers” who will complete and submit a feedback form to the committee.

The DAM Search Committee will meet the following week to review the on site interviews combined with all references, interviews leading up to the on site interview and recommend a candidate to the DAM Board of Directors with hope to make an offer.  Stay tuned….

DAM Second Lifeguard Training

Coach Megan will be offering a lifeguard certification class on the weekend of June 18-19. This will be an initial certification course, for those who have never been certified, and it will be 2 full days of content and training.

Space will be limited, and priority will be given to swimmers who regularly attend practices that have had problems getting a second guard to attend.

Signups will begin next week - check next week's Monday Message for the details.

For those of you who may be wondering what DAM's "second lifeguard" means, here's a little background. -ed.

The City of Davis requires that DAM have two certified lifeguards present at all practices and lap swim sessions.

DAM has a crew of lifeguards on staff, and two of them are present at all lap swim sessions.

For our regular practices, DAM has chosen to train many of our own members as lifeguards, and their regular attendance at practices ensures that a second guard is present. (The coach on deck places a small orange cone at the end of the lane where the second guard is swimming, and DAM maintains an updated list of our second guards and their certification dates, in the event the City does spot-checks of our compliance.)

Why not just hire lifeguards for our regular practices? There are two reasons. First, to do so would significantly increase our payroll, and that would require us to raise dues for all members. Second, and perhaps more importantly, it would be rather hard to find enough lifeguards to staff all of our practices.

DAM Board Meeting

The next DAM Board meeting will be on Thursday, May 12, at 6:30PM in the Brady Building. Please note the special date and time for this meeting!
