Meet Coach Steve

Hi DAM Swimmers,

Thank you for all of the welcomes and introductions.  Over the past week it has been great to come and see the various practices and get to meet a lot of you on the deck.  I am excited to be part of DAM and look forward to seeing you on deck (and in the pool).

   A little bit about me:

Born and raised in Kansas CIty, Missouri.   My grandparents came over from Ireland in the 1920’s.  I am the 4th of 5 boys in the family and my parents have been married for 63 years!!!

My swimming career started at age 16.  I was a terrible swimmer and my first practice at the local YMCA was with the 8&U group.  It did not take long for me to graduate from the 8&U to the senior age group.  My swimming improved greatly over the next 3 years and so did my journey into triathlons.

When I graduated high school I was offered the position of age group coach and aquatics coordinator at the same YMCA that I learned to swim.   From there I coached all ages and managed many different aquatic programs.  During that time I also went into the education world and taught for 9 years and was a principal/administrator for 15.

Some of my Masters coaching has included Gladstone Masters,  YMCA Piranha Masters, Ketchikan Killer Whales, West Coast Aquatics, Santa Clara Swim Club, and Team Sheeper.

From 1991 to now I havehad my hand in aquatics at all different levels and also as an educator.

My endeavors started in Kansas City, but I have also lived in Alaska and the Bay Area.

In the 1990’s I was an avid triathlete and competed in various Ironman, international, and sprint distance triathlons.  As a youngster I did have some pretty fast times ie PR Ironman 9:35, PR International 1:56, PR Marathon 2:48 etc.  But I have been retired for about 20 years.

I am coming back out of retirement and have entered the Ironman California with the hopes of finishing!!!!

Lastly, and most importantly, I am a father of two children (Maya and Alex)  and have been married to my wife Jennifer for 20 years.

Our family lives in Davis and we love the community and all that it has to offer.

I am very excited to have that chlorine smell again and grateful for this opportunity.

See you on the pool deck!

Coach Steve
