The Monday Message - May 2, 2022

Presidents Message

Starting with today's BDoF and continuing for the next ten days, DAM is in one of the most important and exciting times in our club's storied history.

Big Day of Fishing - Kudos to event coordinator Greg Stoner for organizing what could be our most successful fundraiser ever. If you haven't yet donated (and sponsored events at Berryessa or the Summer Splash), there are still two ways to help. Volunteers are in the Brady Room taking donations through 7:30pm tonight or, from the ease of your own home, you can visit the DAM website and donate directly - just click "Donate Now!"

Head Coach Search Update - Tomorrow, the first of our two finalists arrives for final interviews, meetings and on-deck coaching. After both finalists have completed their in-person phase of the candidate selection process, the search committee will convene to gather and review all additional input necessary for their hiring recommendation to the board of directors.

As club president, I have the highest confidence in the process the search committee has taken to reach this point in the selection. Here is an overview of that process.

Beginning in early January, advertising for the position vacancy started locally with Pacific Masters and Pacific youth swimming. In mid-January, that reach was extended nationally through SwimSwam and the American Swim Coaches Association. Nine qualified applicants were in the original candidate pool. Based on their resumes and letters of recommendation, the committee recommended Zoom interviews for the top five candidates.

Following carefully orchestrated online interviews, the committee narrowed the field to the top three applicants.

At that point, they asked each candidate to submit contact information from three previous employers and to voluntarily register for background checks through SportsEngine, Inc. Alongside NCSI (National Center for Sports Initiative) SportsEngine searched for ID verification, local arrest records, national criminal records, sex offender registry, vehicle offenses and more. Combining in-person conversations with previous employers clearly showed that only two of the finalists were closely aligned with our DAM needs at this time.

Those two keenly vetted and highly qualified candidates are Luke Johnson and Matt Zachan.

Please check in today's Monday Message for other ways to meet and interact with each of them on May 4 and May 11.

Berryessa Volunteers still needed!

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to help at our Berryessa swim. We still need people to unload the truck and set up on Friday at the lake (dinner provided), and to help in the following jobs: start, finish, parking, first aid and  water safety. You can sign up at Civic or use our online signups.

We also need people to donate packaged snacks and bottled water. Sign up at the pool.

All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, and we will provide snacks on the day of the event.

You can sign up at Civic, or by clicking the button below! Contact Kathy Gill with any questions.

DAM at USMS Nationals

This past weekend, we had 6 of our very own DAM members compete at the USMS Spring Nationals in San Antonio, Texas. Yeehaw!!

Our swimmers’ ages ranged from 24 to 75, with no one swimmer in the same age group as another! DAM was represented by Vivian Crow (*), Andy McPherson (*), Joan Crow, Sally Guthrie, Stephanie Kinder, and Helene Nehrebecki.

(*) In addition to swimming at Nationals, Vivian and Andy coached their DAM teammates at the event. Thank you Vivian and Andy!

Once again, having a team as diverse as this is always something so incredible about being a masters swimmer - doesn’t matter your age, we’re all sharing the same passion for our club and sport!

Meet Results

We had enough folks at the meet to compete in ONE relay for the whole weekend! Pretty cool to see such an age range on our team as well. You could argue that it was the widest age range of any relay present at the meet, and included a mother-daughter duo. Super!

200 Medley Relay Women 18+

(Helene Nehrebecki, Joan Crow, Vivian Crow, Sally Guthrie)

In addition to our single relay, there were also great individual swims that took place. As a team, we had lots of top 10 national finishers in a variety of events! To name some of the record-breaking and national champion highlights…

DAM Club Records

Sally Guthrie (70-74): 100 Fly, 50 Free, 400 IM, 200 Breast

75-79

Andy McPherson (75-79): 100 Fly, 100 IM, 50 Free

National Champions

Andy McPherson: 100 IM (*** National Record ***)

Sally Guthrie: 400 IM

Again, and as always, FABULOUS swims to all our rowdy DAM fast folks! You all made this second meet experience very enjoyable for the “acting meet coaches” throughout this long, humid weekend!

DAM Head Coach Search Committee Update

We are excited to announce that this Wednesday, 5/4, and next Wednesday, 5/11, our head coach candidates will be on-deck at the 7, 8, noon and 6:15pm practices at Civic pool.

Priority for the 7, 8, and noon practices will be given to the swimmers who regularly attend those practice times. The 6:15 practice will also prioritize swimmers who regularly attend, with the exception that it is a low attended practice and should have overflow room for those of you who would like to swim for the candidates.

If you don’t regularly swim at these four workouts but would like an opportunity to meet the candidates there are still seats available in the Q&A session each Wednesday evening, 5/4 and 5/11, from 5:15-6:00 in the Brady Building. Please register with Mary Kahn at mjoyswim@gmail.com to reserve you spot!

DAM Board Meeting

The next DAM Board meeting will be on Thursday, May 12, at 6:30PM in the Brady Building. Please note the special date and time for this meeting!
